Laura Raffo joins Javier García’s sector
Laura Raffoformer candidate of the National Party, after the decision to join Alianza País disassociation from Herrerismo. The resolution was the result of several days of conversations within the National Party. He was officially incorporated into this new sector this Thursday. According to political sources, Raffo will take second place on the Senate list.
This place had another destination behind Javier García and Luis Lacalle Pou before: it was planned for the mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía. The original proposal towards Antía had been finalized on Saturday, at a time when Raffo was on his way to Masoller, according to party sources informed to El Observador.
Changes to Senate lists
On Friday, after an announcement from Herrrismo, Sebastián da Silva had offered Raffo fourth ownership on the list, but this option did not materialize. Along with Raffo, she will be accompanied by an important technical team in the internal elections, which will strengthen the new political coalition.
With the presence of Raffo, the Alianza País list for the Senate will be structured as follows: Luis Lacalle Pou, Javier Garcia, Laura Raffofollowed by Sergio Botana, Jorge Larrañaga Vidal, María Fajardo, Carlos Camy and Sebastián da Silva. This change is significant in the current political configuration of the National Party.
Dissociation from Herrerism
Raffo’s departure from Herrerismo was formalized at the beginning of September, prompted by the decision that Senator Luis Alberto Heber headed the list, breaking a previous agreement, according to Raffo. In the words of Raffo, “the value of the promised word and commitment to the people is the essence of politics. It has been, and always will be, my goal to defend these principles.”
Raffo’s resignation from Herrerismo shocked Uruguayan politics. In his letter to Luis Alberto Heber, Raffo said that his departure was due to the failure to ensure that she would lead the list of 71 for the next elections, redefining the dynamics of the National Party.
Before this result, a meeting was held between Raffo, Heber and the former president Lacalle Herrera. At that meeting, Raffo was informed that he would receive second place in the list of 71, a fact that he considered a violation of Herrerismo’s previous promises, since his leadership in that list had been promised.
