After discrimination row, staffer of Chennai’s Rohini Cinemas booked under SC/ST Act

A case has been filed against the staff of Rohini Theater in Chennai for not allowing people belonging to the tribal community to watch the movie even though they had tickets in hand. Citing the Tamil Nadu Police, Indian Express reported that the case has been registered under the Prevention of Atrocities Against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. The theater authorities explained that three people were not allowed to enter the theater because three people came with one ticket. The complaint is that those who came to watch the movie Patta Thala were stopped. The issue gained national attention after stars including Vijay Sethupathi and Kamal Haasan reacted against the incident. A family consisting of a woman and a child was barred from watching the film.

Vijay Sethupathi’s response was that such discrimination cannot be accepted under any circumstances and that this earth was created for all human beings to live equally. Kamal Haasan responded through Twitter saying that the incident is condemnable. Vetrimaran also responded that untouchability in theaters ended 100 years ago and the incident that happened today is totally condemnable. The family was admitted to the theater after widespread criticism on social media.
