After endorsing the “super majority,” AMLO now recognizes the Electoral Tribunal

by times news cr

After almost 4 years of criticism of the TEPJFthis Thursday the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador He recognized the organization for endorsing Morena’s “super majority” in the Chamber of Deputies.

This Thursday, when asked for an opinion on the approval given by the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) to ratify the qualified majority of Morena and allies in the Chamber of Deputies (with 364 legislators), he said that:

“The counselors and the magistrates deserve congratulations because they have been subjected to strong pressure from corrupt oligarchs who were accustomed to always imposing themselves with tricks, with money, with the manipulation of the media, and even with the support of foreign governments. The fact that they resist as the people of Mexico do deserves recognition.”

This is because yesterday the Electoral Court ratified the resolution of the National Electoral Institute (INE) to distribute the plurinominal seats by party and not coalition, as requested by the Opposition; during the session the president of the organization, Monica Soto, pointed out that the resolution of the more than 8 thousand challenges in this regard was done without fear of pressure:

“The judiciaries act with absolute public responsibility, professionalism, and adherence to the principles that all judges must comply with. Without fear of criticism, exposure, external pressure, even direct and indirect threats, personal, institutional and family, for judging freely and in accordance with the law.”

The outgoing president extended his recognition to the National Electoral Institute, whose advisors did not “interpret” the Law but rather applied the formula that has been used in recent processes:

“This is how it has been done for the last 15 years, this is how the distribution has been carried out. Suddenly they start to interpret the Constitution so that what is literally established in the Constitution is not applied. This formula had been applied in the previous elections, they wanted to change it.”

What López Obrador said this Thursday is a change in his position towards the electoral authorities, which he has criticized throughout his six-year term: in 2021 he attacked their then incumbents, Lorenzo Córdova (INE) and Reyes Rodríguez Mondragón (TEPJF) for earning more than the President.

That same year, he accused the Court of being “ultra-democratic” when it ordered a recount of votes in the election for governor of Campeche, which gave victory to the current governor Layda Sansores.

In 2022, in his confrontation with the Electoral Court over the attempt to prevent both him and his officials from disseminating the revocation of mandate, he defended himself by saying that “why not promote and have the people participate to decide whether the President continues or resigns?”
Months later (2023) the organization considered that López Obrador did indeed disseminate allusive propaganda during a prohibited period.

Throughout 2023, López Obrador did not cease in his criticism of the Court while it issued sanctions against him, such as considering that he committed political violence based on gender against the then presidential candidate of the Opposition, Xóchitl Gálvez, in response to this, from his Morning Press Conference on August 7, he said that:

“This resolution is issued that exposes in full, exposes the members of the Electoral Tribunal, the magistrates of the Electoral Tribunal, exposes them because they lie, slander, act in a false manner.”

In December of that year, with the electoral process already underway, the president said that, whoever was the head of the organization, he said that he did not trust him, this, because at that time Rodríguez Mondragón was replaced by the current presiding magistrate, Mónica Soto.

By March 2024, Judge Soto responded to the President’s allegations that the Opposition would be looking for members of the TEPJF to concoct a “fraud”:

“In electoral processes, I tell you, the Electoral Court and the electoral institutions are not involved in the campaign. I always try to make this clear and make it clear to the citizens, or to the electoral authorities, to the political parties themselves. The Court is not involved in the campaign, the Court is not a party, it is not an actor, or an actress in the electoral process, it is the last resort.”

And just on July 12, once Morena had achieved the majority of the elected positions in dispute, including the presidency, the head of the Executive lashed out against the Court by calling its members corrupt, after a resolution of the latter, in which it was determined that it was not impartial during the process:

“Now, these lying and corrupt judges claim that I pressured people to vote for the president-elect (Claudia Sheinbaum). Where is the evidence?”
