When chemicals exploded in the port three years ago, the museum was not unscathed either. The building was repaired thanks to donations.

Almost three years after the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut, the Sursock Museum, which was badly damaged by the detonation, has reopened in the Lebanese capital. Interested parties were able to visit the exhibitions of contemporary art again for the first time yesterday evening.

The museum building and artefacts were renovated or repaired during the period of closure. The magnificent museum, which was once the private villa of the art collector and namesake Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock, received grants from UNESCO, Italy, France and private organizations after the explosion.

The explosion in Beirut killed more than 190 people and injured around 6,000. It is said to have been triggered by large quantities of the highly explosive chemical ammonium nitrate, which had been stored in the port for years without protective measures. Large parts of the port and the adjacent residential areas were destroyed. The Sursock Museum is half a mile from the site of the explosion.

For several years, Lebanon has also been caught up in the worst economic and financial crisis in its history. According to the UN, three quarters of the population now live in poverty. (dpa)
