At a news conference, Avon and Somerset police detectives said the suspect was taken to the bridge in a taxi and that the taxi driver was cooperating with officers investigating the incident. The car was also confiscated.
The suspect is described as a black man with a beard, wearing a black Adidas baseball cap, black jeans, a black jacket and black sneakers with thick white soles. He also had a black backpack and was wearing a gold earring.
Bristol Acting Constable Vicks Hayward-Melen said the suspect left the bags and drove off in the direction of Leigh Woods.
She said the force’s “immediate priority is to find the man who took the suitcases to the bridge, identify the deceased and find the next of kin”.
“The bridge and the surrounding area are currently being examined by crime scene investigators and the bridge will remain closed pending these investigations,” she said.
