Wolfsburg – After the devastating IT disruption on Wednesday, the first cars are rolling off the assembly line again at the Volkswagen plants. Production came to a standstill at all German locations from the afternoon onwards. The network error could only be resolved on Thursday morning.
Vehicle production is back in series in the car factories in Emden, Osnabrück and Zwickau, and there are hardly any disruptions in the component plants in Kassel, Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Chemnitz, explained a VW spokesman. According to a company spokesman, VW Commercial Vehicles in Hanover started series production again around 10 a.m.
There are currently still difficulties in the largest Volkswagen plant, the headquarters in Wolfsburg. There is still a bit of jerking there, explained the VW spokesman. After the infrastructure was initially started up after the failure, the individual IT systems were also gradually started up. The hope is that operations in the late shift will run normally again in Wolfsburg.

However, there are still disruptions in the offices and in email traffic. Employees were asked to work from home.
The IT disruption also affected the turnstiles at the factory gates at the VW locations, through which thousands of workers come to shift every day. The employee badges did not work to unlock the turnstiles. Plant security had to let the employees in manually.
Internal IT error caused standstill
According to BILD information, the cause of the network error has already been determined. It is said to be an internal error in VW’s own IT. “There are still no signs that the disruption was caused by external influences,” emphasized a spokesman.
VW plants outside Germany, including in Chattanooga in the US, were also affected by the IT disruption. The production lines were also at a standstill at other corporate brands such as Audi and Porsche. The Skoda plants in the Czech Republic, however, were apparently spared.
There were also disruptions to the IT systems of VW authorized dealers and workshops.
