“We are unpleasantly surprised by the information that appeared in the media about the fact that Hungary has included citizens of Russia and Belarus in its national immigration program, which will give them the opportunity to come freely and move freely around the Schengen area,” said G. Landsbergis in a comment to Elta.

“We turned to the European Commission, asking for an analysis of Hungary’s decision from the point of view of the integrity of the Schengen area and prevention of threats to it,” the minister points out.

G. Landsbergis notes that, in Lithuania’s assessment, Hungary’s move poses very serious threats to the security of the Schengen area and many European countries.

“Therefore, it must be responded to at the EU level. The fact that Hungary made this decision in the context of the fact that European states are facing increasingly intensified kinetic diversionary attacks and acts of sabotage, which are behind the Russian security and intelligence structures, teaches the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“While most European countries are looking for ways to effectively protect themselves from these attacks, Hungary not only hinders such efforts, but with its actions it also enables, or at least facilitates, the hostile behavior of European countries in terms of security,” said G. Landsbergis.

The minister emphasizes that the situation encourages the continuation of the already active discussions regarding Hungary’s unilateral steps and the disregard of common EU policies and interests.

“This situation (…) reinforces the need to urgently seek an adequate response to such an attitude of one member state,” he concluded.

ELTA reminds that this month Hungary informed about the accelerated issuance of visas to citizens of eight countries, including Russia and Belarus, who can enter Hungary without security checks and other restrictions. Budapest says many of the newcomers will build a nuclear power plant based on Russian technology.
