Author Paul Auster loses his granddaughter first, then his son
The 44-year-old son of New York writer Paul Auster was recently arrested: he is said to be responsible for the death of his ten-month-old daughter. Daniel Auster has had more problems with the judiciary and drugs in the past. Now he himself died.
Dhe son of the US bestselling author Paul Auster died himself shortly after investigations were launched into the death of his ten-month-old daughter from opioid poisoning. Daniel Auster was found unconscious in a New York City subway station on April 20 and died in a hospital on Tuesday, a police spokesman told AFP on Thursday. According to the New York Post, he died of an overdose.
The 44-year-old was arrested almost two weeks ago for the death of his daughter Ruby and accused of manslaughter and negligent homicide. He was released on bail.
According to police, the baby died in November as a result of “acute poisoning” with the narcotics fentanyl and heroin while staying in Auster’s apartment in Brooklyn, New York.
Auster woke up unconscious next to his daughter
According to media reports, Auster said at the time that he had injected himself with heroin and then fell asleep next to his daughter. When he woke up, the baby was unconscious. Ruby died in hospital shortly thereafter.
Daniel Auster has had problems with the judiciary in the past. After the 1996 murder of suspected drug dealer Andre “Angel” Melendez, he confessed to being in possession of $3,000 stolen from Melendez. Auster was given a suspended sentence at the time. His roommate at the time and another suspect confessed to killing Melendez.
Paul Auster is one of the most successful writers in the USA. He achieved international fame with his “New York Trilogy” and the novel “Leviathan”. In his 2003 book Night of the Oracle, the narrator is a writer whose son is a drug addict.
Daniel Auster was the son of Paul Auster and his first wife Lydia Davis. Auster also had his daughter Sophie with his second wife Siri Hustvedt.
