“After life”, Ricky Gervais among the ironic and melancholic glimpses of existence (grade 8) – time.news

The third and final season of the Netflix series is the closest thing to Balzac on the market

In a laughing, so to speak, small town in the English province, the imaginary Tambury, a journalist from the local Tribune cannot forget his beloved wife lost to an illness and continuously reviews the videos of the happy days next to her affectionate big dog who participates in family mourning. Who has tasted the two seasons of the tragicomedy After life (Netflix) has already recognized it as one of the most surprising, original, ironic and melancholic mini-series in the serial hemisphere – six episodes each season of half an hour each.

Direct, conceived and interpreted by very good and measured Ricky Gervais the series consists of an impressionistic series of small portraits of a community that tries and pretends to be happy, starting with the protagonist who does not rest and every day at the cemetery observes the tomb alongside another inconsolable widow (the magnificent Penelope Wilton, Downtown Abbey’s progressive consuocera). And then there are the editor of the newspaper who would like to be a sportsman, the local postman in love with the prostitute, the more or less frustrated work colleagues to whom we now add, finally, a girl with the absurd habit of loneliness and all together they are a little girl. community in which it is not difficult to recognize oneself beyond geography.

The funny thing is the mini fact-finding inquiries, the glimpses of existence (such as Live Life), which everyday life tries to discover in the desert of a place without connections. And so couples who discover sexual exchange and in general old people – and to whom fate reserves unusual strokes of bad luck or manic forms of distraction. And again the fat boy who wants to be an actor, the gay extremist manager, the single woman who can’t wait to find a man, all gathered in the characterization of the more angular sides of life at the local food fair. The expressive happiness of the series in its measure, in the script of a few words that let us see the chasms of the unexpressed, the desire almost not to take oneself seriously, the truth of the small observations, up to the little happy surprise of the ending which leaves no hope for a fourth chapter but leaves a way open to the surreal.

All the characters are real prototypes but always ready to make way for a little absurdity, as are certain existential moments and the Ionesco quote suits us well. Everything is a great little and happy gimmick that multiplies but without repeating itself, because in the meantime we are part of the community, we are fond of everyone, they are the things of life: the closest series to Balzac on the market.
