Tens of thousands of protesters blocked a Belgrade highway on Friday (May 12) demanding the resignation of senior officials and the regulation of violent content in the media following two mass killings. Serbs had already protested in numbers on Monday after the shootings that sowed fear in the small Balkan country last week.

Several opposition parties, ranging from left to right, called for this demonstration after the assassination of seventeen people, including eight schoolchildren in Belgrade, in two shootings which occurred less than forty-eight hours apart. .

The protesters are calling for the revocation of the licenses of television channels that broadcast violent programs, as well as the banning of pro-government newspapers that stir up tensions with articles they deem vulgar about dissonant voices. They also demand the resignation of the Serbian interior minister and the head of the intelligence services and call on parliament to meet in extraordinary session to discuss the authorities’ reaction.

Disarmament plan

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic calls protests a coup ” policy “. “They plan their demonstrations during the mourning of the nation with the sole aim of violence and the violent seizure of power”, he launched on television. The Head of State announced a demonstration of his support for May 26, which he said will be “the largest rally in Serbian history”.

After the killings, the Serbian president promised a large-scale disarmament plan for the population. According to the Small Arms Survey research project, 39% of people in Serbia own a firearm, the highest rate in Europe.
