After the death of the 18-year-old Swiss woman, the sad day in the cycling world continues. Another driver died a few hours later.

The Dutch cycling talent Bas van Belle died “unexpectedly” on Friday at the age of just 24. The Dutch cycling association KNWU announced this on its website. It initially remained unclear how the Wielerploeg Groot Amsterdam club cyclist died.

“We mourn his loss, Bas leaves a big gap in the world of cycling. Our thoughts are with his family – especially his parents and his siblings Lisa and Loe,” wrote the KNWU in a statement. “We will remember him as a warm and friendly person and a talented cyclist.”

Van Belle’s brother Loe, who is two years younger, is a cycling star in the Visma team, which also takes part in the Tour de France. His sister Lisa (20) also shares his passion for cycling: in the summer she even won the bronze medal in band cycling at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Just a few hours earlier, the cycling world was shocked by the death of an 18-year-old Swiss woman. Muriel Furrer died from injuries sustained in a fall on Thursday. This was announced by the world association UCI and the organizers. Furrer died in the University Hospital of Zurich.

Furrer suffered a severe traumatic brain injury when she fell in the junior women’s race at the World Road Cycling Championships in Zurich. She fell in a forest on the lap on the north side of Lake Zurich that is run in all road races. Furrer was taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter. However, the doctors there could no longer save her life. It is still unclear exactly how the fall occurred. The investigations are ongoing.
