The family of former Transitional Council member Fathi Al-Baja confirmed to Al-Ahrar that he and two of his companions were released and that he had arrived home after nearly a year of imprisonment in Benghazi.

The family said that “Fathi Al-Baja” is in good health, and thanked the media for their role in supporting him during his detention.

Al-Baja and his companions were arrested on October 1, 2023, after they were summoned for investigation by the Internal Security Service in Benghazi, based on reports described by the Libyan Crime Monitoring Organization as “malicious,” and which were filed against them due to their political activity and holding meetings without prior permission.

According to the Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, Al-Baja had previously stated that Muammar Gaddafi had hidden billions of dollars in private accounts in Canadian banks during his 42-year rule.

Al-Baja said that he has secret documents that confirm the financial wealth that Gaddafi has hidden, indicating that he intends to protect those financial records in Libya, for fear of them falling under the threat of “corruption,” and to hand them over when a new government is elected through democratic elections in the country.

Fathi Al-Baja served as a member of the National Transitional Council during the February 17 Revolution in 2011, and then served as Libya’s ambassador to Canada.
