After several years of waiting, Piscina Mar reopened to the public

It’s official: the moment everyone in Figueirense has been waiting for has arrived. More than twenty years after it was closed, Piscina Mar opened to the public this past Monday, July 15. The renovated space is 300 square meters, where you can relax under the shade of the parasol or cool off in the pool.

The Piscina Mar complex is located on the beach, is one of the city’s flagship buildings and is classified as a Property of Public Interest, although it has been closed for several years. It is known to have belonged to the Grande Hotel, now revised as the Vila Galé Collection on April 15.

The building has been there since June 1953. It was designed by the architect Inácio Peres Fernandez and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2002. After celebrating 70 years, the space managed by the Accor group becomes as part of the national network. This is now accompanied by the new facilities at Piscina Mar.

The pool complex and 13-room inn was attached to the original structure in the 1960s to the 1980s, was publicly accessible and known for being 33 meters long and having two diving boards, five and ten meters deep. length. It was closed in the 90s, and was rebuilt in 2001 until it was deactivated again.

Piscina Mar is open from Monday to Sunday, between 10am and 7:30pm. A bar, sunrooms, parasols and showers were installed. According to the president of the City Council of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Santana Lopes, this was the result of everyone’s efforts and “the true strengths of the people who work there”.

Despite everything, Piscina Mar is not a finished project. “Maybe there’s an agreement with a nearby hotel unit – it doesn’t even mean that [Vila Galé Collection]that does not mean, according to our discretion, that people in general no longer have access to the pool and the tariff can never be specified in disagreement with the municipality”, explains the councilor Ricardo Silva.

This time, entry will be paid. From 10 am to 7:30 pm, it costs €7 for children over 12 years old, the rest pay €4. For entries from 4:30 pm, the cost is €2 for younger guests and €5 for those over 12 years of age. There are also family packs, up to 12 years old it costs €2 and after that age it costs €5 per person. For eight pooled access up to 12 years old, it costs €19 and over that age it costs €38. The structure is accessible to people with mobility difficulties or disabilities.
