President of ANTEL, Gabriel Gurméndez

Gabriel Gurméndez, current president of Antel, has announced his decision to leave his position at the end of October with the purpose of running as a presidential candidate for the Colorado Party, according to information from Telemundo and confirmations obtained by Montevideo Portal through political sources.

In a recent meeting held with the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, various topics were addressed, the most notable being Gurméndez’s interest in becoming a candidate for the Colorado Party. This aspiration forces him to present his resignation during the course of this month, since this is established by the Constitution.

When asked about it, Gurméndez chose not to comment and limited himself to expressing: “Formally, I have not resigned, and when I make a decision, I will communicate it,” he soberly told journalists from Montevideo Portal.

Senator Raúl Batlle, belonging to List 15, issued a public statement last Wednesday, on behalf of his group, urging Gurméndez to resign from his position in the entity as soon as possible and take charge of a presidential pre-candidacy. For her part, former Vice Chancellor Carolina Ache also expressed that Gabriel Gurméndez would be an excellent candidate.

Should the leaders resign to be pre-candidates?

In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic, an important requirement is stipulated for the leaders of government entities who aspire to elective positions and are prevented from carrying out proselytizing activities. This regulation establishes that these leaders must resign from their positions with a deadline set at October 27 of the year prior to the 2024 elections.

This requirement acquires significant relevance in the political and administrative context of the country, since it seeks to guarantee impartiality and transparency in electoral processes. By removing the leaders from their positions a year before the elections, any undue influence on government bodies is avoided and fair competition between candidates is promoted.

The Colorado Party does not score well in any of the surveys that have been carried out in recent months. In most cases, voting intention is around 5%, plus a few percentage points.

The president of the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP), Robert Silva, would also be considering resigning from the position to compete internally for the Ciudadanos sector. He formed Ernesto Talvi’s presidential ticket in the last elections, being the candidate for vice president, but now he wants to go for the presidency directly.
