DALLAS — A Dallas County jury has awarded $21.1 million in damages to a patient who was left unconscious after undergoing general anesthesia for knee and leg surgery. A young man named Carlos Rohad (32) is unconscious.

While climbing a ladder to put up Christmas lights, he fell down and injured his leg and knee. The incident took place in October 2017. Carlos was admitted to Baylor University Medical Center (Dallas) the next day, requiring surgery.

During the surgery, the patient’s blood pressure dropped significantly and oxygen to the brain was not supplied, which led to the patient’s brain ceasing and becoming bedridden. In 2021, Carlos’ family filed a lawsuit against Registered Nurse Anesthetist Kaydee Martin, Dr. Mallory Kline, US Hearts of Texas, and Baylor University Medical Center.

No drop in blood pressure was noted during surgery. Later, the jury found that the patient had been given medication to increase blood pressure but had not recorded this and made a false record that the patient’s blood pressure level was normal at the time of surgery. Electronic records were also found destroyed.
