After the arrival of floods, Ghat Emergency calls on the residents of the valleys to evacuate immediately

Floods reached the Tin Kawiya area, east of Al-Barakat Municipality, and southeast of Ghat Municipality, on Wednesday afternoon.

Ghat Emergency Committee spokesman Hassan Osman Issa called on residents living along the city’s valleys to evacuate immediately, stressing that “floods coming from Algeria are reaching the valleys that feed the water.”

“More than 80 people have been evacuated to shelters, and the situation is currently of medium risk, but there are fears of heavy rains in Ghat, which will make matters worse. The peak of the rains in this wave is expected today after the clouds have increased significantly in the city’s sky,” Issa told the Libyan newspaper Al-Anbaa.

He confirmed that an agreement had been reached with the electricity company to “disconnect the electrical circuits in the event of rain, so that the stations would not be damaged.”

He pointed out that “the basic needs are available to the people currently in shelters and their situation is good, but there is a possibility of an increase in the number of displaced people if the rains sweep the city again, and it will be difficult to cover the number.”

This morning, “the National Center for Meteorology issued a warning of floods and valleys flowing from the Algerian mountainous heights (Tassili and Djanet) towards the Libyan regions, warning of the need for caution and care, especially near valley courses.”

The center expected “the increase of thunderclouds, especially on Wednesday afternoon in the areas of Ghat, Al-Barak, Al-Uwaynat, and Tahala, accompanied by scattered, good to heavy rains at times in the border areas with Algeria,” noting “the increase of thunderclouds on Wednesday in the areas of Ghat and its surroundings, with good to heavy rains at times.”
