“In Lithuania, both the Speaker of the Seimas and the Prime Minister are protected at all times, with the exception of some reservations that can be coordinated with the Security Service of the Executive, but, again, in each such case, the level of threats is assessed,” the Speaker of the Parliament told Eltai on Monday.
When asked whether it would be worthwhile to consider strengthening the level of protection of the Speaker of the Seimas and the Prime Minister, the parliamentarian replied that in other European countries the level of protection of these government representatives is lower than in Lithuania.
“I don’t think we should dwell on that,” she added.
Asta Skaisgirytė, the chief advisor of President Gitanas Nausėda, mentioned the possibility of reconsidering the protection of the leaders of the Seimas and the Government, because the protection regime of the head of the country and the speaker of the parliament and the prime minister are not the same.
“The management security service works very well, the president has no complaints about it. Well, those who voluntarily refused protection should perhaps reconsider this,” the advisor told reporters on Monday.
As previously announced, a couple of years ago the Seimas adopted amendments to the Law on the Protection of Management, which stipulates that the leaders of the Seimas and the Government are not protected by officers around the clock. This exception does not apply to the President.
ELTA reminds that there was an attack on a politician at the Trump campaign event in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. After an attacker shot at the former US president, D. Trump injured his ear. One spectator was shot dead and two others were injured in the attack.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified the shooter at Trump’s campaign event. This is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from the state of Pennsylvania. Security forces killed the 20-year-old shooter.
