The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, issued his instructions to provide genetic laboratories for patients with muscular dystrophy and their families, and to begin procedures for supplying them, with the necessity of continuing to conduct genetic analyses for patients and their families.

This came during a meeting with the Muscular Dystrophy Patients Organization, in the presence of the Acting Minister of Health, the Chairman of the Public Tender Committee, the Chairman of the Therapeutic Services Development Authority, the Director of the Pharmacy Department at the Ministry of Health, the Director of Banking Operations at the Central Bank, and the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.

According to the Government of National Unity, Dabaiba stressed the urgent completion of treatment for cases under two years of age, and the provision of specialized and general medicines related to this disease through manufacturing companies.

Al-Dabaiba directed the necessity of implementing the physical therapy program internally, through the agreement concluded by the Therapeutic Services Development Authority with one of the specialized companies, and giving importance to this program.

The organization had called for reopening genetic analyses for patients, providing genetic injections and specialized medications, in addition to improving solidarity salaries for patients’ families, and providing home assistance, noting that the number of cases had reached 793.

Last week witnessed the death of 3 children suffering from muscular dystrophy, “Bayan, Mansour, and Naji,” and the Muscular Dystrophy Patients Association expressed its dissatisfaction with the lack of provision of medications, genetic tests, and the opening of a health care unit for atrophy patients.

On July 15, a number of muscular dystrophy patients called on the unity government to find a radical solution to the health obstacles they face throughout the country, especially those related to their access to medication.

In a protest, patients held the government responsible for the delay in providing medicines and health care, especially after a number of patients lost their lives. They demanded that procedures be facilitated in some service offices, especially in the southern region.

The statement also stressed the need to launch a special national programme to treat muscular dystrophy patients and allocate a fully equipped hospital for them.
