Warming of relations: The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, left for Qatar this evening (Monday) – this was reported by the Qatari news agency WAM. The diplomatic visit was held at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
This is the first diplomatic visit by a senior Emirati official to Qatar since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the countries last year. As a reminder, in 2017 the United Arab Emirates announced the severance of relations with Qatar along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain, following the Qatari government’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran’s terrorist activities.
Before traveling to Qatar, Bin Zayed is expected to meet today with the country’s President Yitzhak Herzog, who arrived in Abu Dhabi this morning as part of his political visit to the Persian Gulf countries. Herzog will also meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Emirates, and will also participate and speak at the International Space Conference currently being held in the Emirates capital.
