Spaniards are above the European average (35%) regarding this perception, led by Poland, with 40%, and Romania, with 39% of the population who claim to be more susceptible to catching a cold after the pandemic.

After the pandemic, the majority of Spaniards have returned to their daily routine and feel calmer about the symptoms of respiratory conditions such as the common cold. However, the situation experienced has left a tangible mark on the population: 38% of Spaniards say they now feel more prone to catching a cold, according to the results of the Health Report 2023, a study carried out on 32,000 people in 16 European countries on the population’s view of health. 26% attribute it to the pandemic while 12% do not establish any relationship with COVID-19. Compared to other European countries, Spaniards are above the European average (35%) regarding this perception, which is led by Poland, with 40%, and Romania, with 39% of the population who claim to be more susceptible to catch a cold after the pandemic.

By age, it stands out that half of young people in Spain between 18 and 34 years old (50%) say they are now more susceptible to catching a cold and 36% attribute this to the pandemic. Only 13% are convinced that this has nothing to do with COVID-19. Compared to other Europeans, young Belgians and Austrians lead this group with 57% and 54%, respectively, considering that they are more likely to catch colds after the pandemic.

Regarding the behavior that the population adopts in intimate relationships if they suffer the symptoms of a cold, the results of the Health Report 2023 reveal that 64% of Spaniards would continue to maintain intimate relationships with their partner, even if they had a cold. 69% of Spaniards would not want to stop kissing their partner, and a similar number (67%) would consider having sexual relations. There are also significant differences between genders: men are more likely to maintain relationships with their partner (69%) despite having a cold than women (59%).

Cold and nasal irritation

The drop in temperatures that accompanies the arrival of winter is associated with a decrease in defenses and a greater susceptibility to suffering from respiratory conditions such as the common cold. Congestion, nasal obstruction and sneezing are some of the most frequent symptoms that usually come together in annoying nasal irritation. Rev. Ana Mera, pharmacist. Barcelona
