« [Cette vidéo] truly reflects how some have been constantly trying to undermine our presidency since day one. Sultan Al-Jaber has been very clear that he believes in science. » The presidency of the 28th world climate conference (COP28) reacted, Monday, December 4, to the images published on Sunday by the British daily The Guardianregretting the criticism made by the international media and repeating that the objective of limiting warming to 1.5 oC was ” the North star “ from Sultan Al-Jaber, the president of COP28 – a phrase repeated repeatedly since the conference opened on Thursday.

The video revealed by the British daily shows a tense exchange between Sultan Al-Jaber and former Irish President Mary Robinson, a member of the Global Elders group, which took place on November 21. “I will in no case subscribe to alarmist discussions, Sultan Al-JAber affirms during this discussion. No scientific study, no scenario, says that the exit from fossil fuels will allow us to reach 1.5 oC. (…) Show me the road map for an exit from fossil fuels that is compatible with socio-economic development, without sending the world back to the age of caves. »

On Monday morning, Majid Al-Suwaidi, Director General of COP28, explained that Sultan Al-Jaber was speaking, in this exchange, about the goal of reaching “net zero emissions” in 2050, emphasizing that “all scientific reports clearly indicate that fossil fuels will be part of the mix [énergétique] ».

The telling figures from the experts

In its transition scenario updated in September, the International Energy Agency estimates that fossil fuel production in the energy sector must fall by 83% between 2022 and 2050, leaving a residual production of 88 exajoules (EJ) – compared to 511 EJ in 2022. For its part, in its report published in March, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that the use of coal, oil and gas must decrease respectively by approximately 95%, 60% and 45% by 2050 (compared to 2019) to hope to limit global warming to 1.5 oC.

Sultan Al-Jaber also affirms that a reduction and an exit from fossil fuels are, according to him, “inevitable”. “Sultan Al-Jaber is a practitioner, a scientist, an engineer. In this conversation he was simply asking: help me understand how [faire cette transition]. How can we achieve the 2050 goals in a responsible, equitable and just manner? How to achieve this technologically? How to make the right investments? »defended M. Al-Suwaidi.
