“Renovating the arena of Riga Sport is one of our biggest projects in recent years. We have done a huge amount of work to restore this historic sports center to modern needs, even though it was previously wanted to be demolished. Our talented athletes are already training in these facilities and participating in various competitions, strengthening the development of sports both in Riga and in Latvia. This arena has a rich history: from being the most modern sports center in the country to when the building lost its luster and was used for various non-sports events. However, the arena has now regained its sporting spirit! The renovation of the arena has been an important decision, which is also confirmed by the results of the athletes and also by how much potential there is in the development of young talents of Riga’s track and field athletes and how important it is to provide adequate sports infrastructure for our young people. Next year, we plan to finish the remaining improvement works of the premises, completing the renovation works of the Riga sports arena in full,” says the Vice Mayor of Riga, Edvards Ratnieks.
The building on Kojusalas street was renovated and energy efficiency works were carried out so that the arena’s infrastructure meets the standards set by sports federations and reduces its operating costs. Also, the javelin throwers, shot putters and exercise rooms were renovated in the arena, as well as the connection to the centralized heat supply, which was carried out by SIA “LC Būve”.
The total costs for energy efficiency works amounted to 2.2 million euros (including VAT). The renovation of the premises, on the other hand, cost 954,695 euros (including VAT).
A random interior renovation of the arena, including the restoration of the first floor corridors and utility networks, represented an investment of €842,607 (incl. VAT). The works were carried out by SIA “APSA Būve”, construction supervision by SIA “IJ Vide”.
Since June 2021, the sports school “Arkādija” has been responsible for the Riga Sport arena, which currently provides the previous basic function of the arena – public access to sports infrastructure for sports, competitions and events.
The sports arena is an important training place for both young and professional athletes in Riga. Almost 500 athletes visit the Riga Sports Arena of the sports school “Arkādija” every day, many of whom are not only from Riga, but also from other Latvian cities such as Mārupe, Ādaži, Jūrmala and Lielvārde. This place is used by the Latvian National Armed Forces, the Prisons Administration, Riga Technical University and the University of Latvia for training and physical regulatory tests.
The Riga National Sports Arena was built in 1965. At that time, it was one of the most modern sports facilities in the country. The large gymnasium had up to 3,700 spectator seats.
How does the revitalization of the Riga Sport Arena impact the local community and sports culture in Latvia?
Interview: Revitalizing Riga Sport Arena – An Insight with Expert Edvards Ratnieks
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, Edvards Ratnieks! Thank you for joining us today. The renovation of the Riga Sport Arena has been a significant topic of discussion. Could you start by sharing the motivation behind this ambitious project?
Edvards Ratnieks (ER): Thank you for having me! The primary motivation was to restore a historic landmark that was once the pride of Riga. We were facing the potential demolition of a venue that not only has a rich sports history but also has the capacity to nurture the next generation of athletes. We considered it essential to revitalize the arena to meet modern needs and maintain its role as a central hub for sports in Latvia.
TNE: It sounds like this project was born from both a sense of heritage and a commitment to modern sports infrastructure. Could you elaborate on the specific renovations that took place?
ER: Certainly! Our approach involved not only aesthetic improvements but also significant upgrades to energy efficiency. We renovated facilities for javelin throwers and shot putters, and we modernized the exercise rooms. These upgrades ensure that the infrastructure complies with the latest standards set by sports federations, which is crucial for hosting competitive events.
TNE: It’s great to hear that the renovations were comprehensive! What has been the impact on the local athlete community since these changes were made?
ER: We’ve seen a remarkable resurgence in sporting activities at the arena. Local athletes are already training and participating in various competitions, and the results speak for themselves. This venue is integral in developing young talents, especially in track and field. We’ve created a space that fosters athletic growth, and the enthusiasm from both athletes and coaches has been incredibly positive.
TNE: That’s inspiring! You mentioned the importance of sports infrastructure for young people. Why do you think that’s vital for the future of sports in Riga and Latvia as a whole?
ER: Investing in sports infrastructure is crucial for a few reasons. Firstly, it provides young athletes with the facilities they need to train effectively. Secondly, it fosters a sense of community and encourages participation in sports from a young age. This engagement not only contributes to individual health and fitness but also helps build a more vibrant and active society. The talents we nurture today will shape Latvia’s sports landscape in the future.
TNE: Absolutely! With the completion of the renovations expected next year, what are your future plans for the arena?
ER: Our goal is to finish the remaining works and ensure that the Riga Sport Arena is equipped not only for athletes but also for hosting larger events. We aim to attract international competitions that can put Riga on the sports map. Moreover, we are committed to continuous improvement, ensuring that the venue grows alongside our athletes and the evolving demands of modern sports.
TNE: It sounds like an exciting time ahead for the Riga Sport Arena! Lastly, what message would you like to convey to the local community and the athletes who will benefit from this revitalization?
ER: I want to emphasize that this project is as much for the community as it is for the athletes. We believe in the power of sports to unite people, inspire young minds, and contribute to a healthier society. I encourage everyone to engage with the arena—come out to support our athletes, explore the facilities, and be a part of this exciting revival of the sporting spirit in Riga!
TNE: Thank you for sharing your insights, Edvards. It’s clear that the Riga Sport Arena renovation is more than just a construction project; it’s a catalyst for growth and opportunity in the region. We look forward to seeing the transformation unfold!
ER: Thank you! I’m excited for what lies ahead, and I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this important project with you.
