The French Embassy in Libya announced its support for the statement of the United Nations mission regarding the kidnapping of activist Moatasem Al-Araibi in Misrata.

The embassy called for the release of Al-Araibi and all persons detained arbitrarily and outside the law in Libya.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya had called for the immediate and urgent disclosure of the fate of activist Moatasem Al-Araibi and his immediate release.

In a statement, the mission expressed its deep concern over the kidnappings of Al-Araibi and his companion, Mohammed Ishtiwi, in the city of Misrata, calling on the relevant authorities in the city to open an urgent investigation into the incident.

The mission also called for holding accountable all those responsible for kidnappings and arbitrary detentions and for there to be no impunity, noting that cases of arrest continue to plague Libya and that these illegal practices have created a climate of fear and an erosion of the rule of law, according to the statement.

The activist Al-Arabi was kidnapped by an armed group wearing civilian clothes, along with Mohammed Ishtiwi, in the city of Misurata on June 8. The latter was beaten and tortured before being released.

The mission’s statement came in support of the statement of the notables of Misrata and the municipal council, who condemned the kidnapping of the two young men, “Moatsem Al-Arabi and Mohammed Ishtiwi,” and called on the security authorities to make efforts to reveal the fate of the kidnapped.
