The curists finally in the big bath to cure their rheumatisms! Nancy Thermal’s health center opened on Monday, two months behind schedule due to initially non-compliant water, linked to the late delivery of part of the facilities.

More than 100 people will begin their 20 days of treatment this week, including 18 of treatments, mainly in rheumatology. “It’s a big relief. Now, all the mechanics are in place and running, ”rejoiced with AFP François Werner, 1st vice-president of the metropolis of Greater Nancy in charge of Attractiveness, economic development and tourism.

A multifunction pool, 70 treatment cabins

Some 2,800 spa guests are already registered for the spa season, “which gives hope for a figure that should exceed 3,000”, in accordance with the objectives. Bernard Riac, CEO of Valvital, the operator of the site, estimates that 5,000 to 6,000 people could frequent the establishment in 2024, when the season will start in March. The complex has a multifunction pool, a rest area and more than 70 treatment cabins.

The delay could ultimately “not have a considerable effect” on attendance at the establishment, hoped François Werner. The majority of people affected by the opening delays chose to reschedule their treatment, rather than cancel it and obtain a refund. Phlebology care should “start in September with a walkway type installation which will be started at that time”, specifies Bernard Riac at France Blue.

Lots of spa guests in the region

For this first year, the proportion of regional curists is higher. But in the long term, the metropolis estimates that tourism linked to well-being and cures could represent 300,000 additional overnight stays in Nancy, i.e. a 20% increase in tourist overnight stays. Valvital, which notably manages the thermal baths of Enghien (Val-d’Oise), second in the sector in France, will also launch communication campaigns to make the center known to an audience from other backgrounds.

“It will also be tourism of a different nature, with people who will stay longer,” said François Werner. A key sector of the local economy, tourism is a priority for the recovery and economic development plan of the Greater Nancy metropolis.

Nancy Thermal, also dedicated to well-being, officially opened its doors on April 1, 2023. Pool closures, hygiene problem, several criticisms were heard in the first months from users, reports France 3 Great East.

The discovery of a hot spring at the beginning of the 20th century century had motivated the opening of a first spa establishment in Nancy, but the building remained unfinished after the Great War. The new complex constitutes the sixth spa resort in Lorraine, joining the five historical establishments of the Vosges (Plombières-les-Bains where the thermal baths have partially reopened, Bains-les-Bains, Contrexéville, Vittel) as well as Amnéville in Moselle.
