Electricity production in France, after two years of crisis, reached the highest level since 2019 in the first half of the year, mainly thanks to the dams, indicates RTE, manager of the French electricity transmission network.

After the crises of 2020 and 2022, French electricity production continues to recover, with 272 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the middle of the year in total, mainly thanks to the hydraulic work “super high”, the backgrounds a half-year electronic study published Tuesday.

French dams produced 41 TWh in the first six months of the year, i.e. +37% in volume compared to 2023 and +13% compared to the 2000-2020 average, mainly thanks to winter and spring rains they.

Advances in nuclear and renewable energy

Nuclear production, affected in recent years by the phenomenon of corrosion on some reactors, “continues to rise”, to 177 TWh, up 12% compared to last year, but also down 14% compared to 2000-2020 .

Renewable production (wind, solar) for its part “increases more”, with production of 25.5 TWh for wind power, and 11.4 TWh for photovoltaics (+3% and +5%).

Fossil heat production, mainly from gas, on the other hand “has never been lower since the 1950s”, at 11.5 TWh, a reduction of 54% compared to 2000-2020. In particular, the electric power plants have only worked for 100 hours since the beginning of the year.

“In the first half, 96% of the French electricity production was decarbonized,” said Thomas Veyrenc, director general in charge of economy and strategy at RTE, who showed “excellent performance” in this area.
