The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, arrived in Turkey this Tuesday (7) and is expected to meet with the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the capital, Ankara. He traveled accompanied by other high-ranking officials from the movement, which is classified as a terrorist organization by several countries. The information comes from the Palestinian news agency Ma’an.

According to agency sources, Haniyeh’s trip, who lives in Qatar, is related to his recent visit to Iranwhere he met with senior Iranian government officials and also with the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

On the 31st, Ismail Haniyeh met, in Doha, the capital of Qatar, with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

The meetings held by Haniyeh and his group were, according to Ma’an, to discuss the political repercussions of the Hamas war against Israel.

Iran and Turkey are long-time supporters of Hamas. Other political leaders of the terrorist organization have lived on Turkish soil for years.

In 2020, a United States investigation found that Istanbul-based Turkish bank Kuveyt Turk knowingly maintained bank accounts linked to Hamas financing.

At the same time, Turkey is a great ally of the West, possessing the second largest Army in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), but has positioned itself emphatically in favor of Hamas in the war against Israel.

Erdogan himself called for demonstrations — something rare in Turkey under his command — pro-Palestine. He even stated that Hamas is not terrorists, but rather a “liberation group”.

On Saturday (4), the Turkey’s president said he cut ties with Israel’s prime ministerBenjamin Netanyahu.

“Netanyahu is no longer someone we can talk to. We did,” he said.
