“Since the terrorist attacks against Israel we have taken measures to label or eliminate tens of thousands of content,” said the network’s executive director, Linda Yaccarino, in response to criticism from the European Union.

The letter was published after threats on Wednesday made by the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, who warned that these contents should be removed within 24 hours.

“In response to the recent terrorist attack against Israel by Hamas, we have redeployed resources and refocused internal teams working around the clock to address this rapidly evolving situation. Today we responded to the European Commission’s letter requesting an update on how we are responding to this conflict. Our work is in progress,” Yaccarino indicated through X.

“Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that its platform is being used to spread illegal content and disinformation” in the European Union, Breton said in his letter.

Breton addressed that letter to both X and Meta, the platform that includes Facebook and Instagram, in the hands of Mark Zuckerberg.

In August, the EU approved legislation banning illegal online content under threat of fines that can reach up to 6% of a company’s global turnover.

Yaccarino’s letter, published by X, mentioned that the company had removed hundreds of accounts linked to Hamas since the attacks on Saturday.

They had also removed posts that involved “violent speech, media manipulation and violent images.”
