It has been confirmed that the government has earmarked a budget of approximately 14 billion won over three years to build a new security facility for President Yoon Seok-yeol’s private residence after he leaves office. This figure is more than double the budget for previous presidents.

According to the ‘2025 Budget and Fund Management Plan Business Explanation Material’ submitted by the office of Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Choi Min-hee from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance on the 4th, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance has allocated 1.169 billion won in next year’s budget for construction of new office facilities. This is the cost of building compensation of 1 billion won and detailed design cost of 101 million won to build security facilities near the private residence where President Yoon will reside after May 9, 2027, when he leaves office.

According to the annual investment plan in the mid-term financial plan for the project, 11.988 billion won will be allocated in 2026 when the security facility is to be built, and 823 million won will be allocated in 2027 when it will be completed and occupied. If combined with next year’s budget of 1.169 billion won, the total will be 13.98 billion won.

This is more than double the amount from the previous government. During the Moon Jae-in administration, the budget for the private residence security facility was adjusted from 4.929 billion won in 2020 to 6.663 billion won in 2021, and a total of 6.2 billion won was spent after National Assembly deliberation. During the Park Geun-hye administration, 6.767 billion won was allocated, the largest amount among all presidential private residence budgets.

A Democratic Party official pointed out, “It will be difficult to avoid criticism that this administration is completely disregarding the lives of the people by investing excessive amounts of money in a private security facility for the president at a time when the people’s economy is in ruins.”

Regarding this, an official from the Office of the President explained, “The budget for the security facilities for the private residence after retirement is a provisional estimate and has not been finalized.” He continued, “The government budget is a provisional amount that was prepared in consideration of the metropolitan area, regions, consumer prices, and real estate increase rates. Once the location of the private residence is decided in the future, it will be applied to the detailed budget and finalized.”

The passport says, “President Yoon is looking at areas such as Gangwon-do, Yangpyeong, and Gapyeong in Gyeonggi-do, which are about an hour away from Seoul by car, in order to prepare a private residence in the form of a single-family home.” Former President Lee Myung-bak lives in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, former President Park lives in Dalseong-gun, Daegu, and former President Moon lives in Pyeongsan Village, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.
