New Delhi: The preparations for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections have intensified. From Afzal Guru to Rubia Sayeed, everyone is being mentioned in the election campaign by the National Conference. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has said in a recent statement that hanging Afzal Guru, the culprit of the 2001 Parliament attack, did not help. This is not the first time that Omar has mentioned AFSPA. In 2012, while being the Chief Minister of the then Jammu and Kashmir state, he advocated the removal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). He had even announced that AFSPA would be removed during his tenure, but this proposal was strongly opposed by the army.

Omar is contesting from Ganderbal and Budgam assembly seats. A total of 24 candidates have filed nominations for the Ganderbal seat. The main candidates against him include Maulvi Sarjan Barkati, PDP’s Bashir Ahmed Mir and Ishfaq Jabbar, who has parted ways with the J&K United Movement (JKUM) and is contesting as an independent. In Ganderbal, Abdullah is making an emotional appeal to the people. He took off his cap here for the first time and asked for votes to save his honour. It is believed that Omar Abdullah is struggling to understand the winning formula. However, many people say that the Abdullah family has a strong political hold in Ganderbal.
When will the voting take place?
Voting in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases, with the first phase on September 18, the second phase on September 25 and the final phase on October 1. The election results will be declared on October 8.
