Racist Folklore, Negrophobe in Ath: Wound of the Black Diaspora living in Belgium

Ath (Belgium), 08/27/2023 – The Belgian black diaspora is once again hurt in her strong interior because of the racist folklore of the Ducasse d’Ath, with her wild character turned devil.

In Belgium, a Burundian diaspora with several thousand Belgian-Burundian citizens exists.

As we approach the start of the 2023 school year, young black people of African origin once again had to watch on Belgian television, traumatizedthe “Savage” of the “Ducasse” become the “Devil”, a tradition dating back to Belgium’s racist eraOr black african slavery was practiced in Europe, assimilating the latter to movable property, particularly in France, and in Belgium where colonization began, a crime against humanity.

The character of the “Savage” from the Ducasse d’Ath, a negrophobic representation painted in black, renamed “the Devil” in 2023, has been removed from the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity established by UNESCO due to the racist image that it conveys in the unconscious of young Belgians. So, being Black is associated with a “savage” or a “devil”seeing a psychologically destructive message to Belgians in general, being able to feed a latent racism. Meanwhile, young black Belgians carry a considerable identity wound and frustration.

In the crowd, those who grew up with this racist folklore applauded and chanted “Thank you Wild!” (became “the Devil”). Although few of them consider themselves racist or negrophobic, they lack compassion towards black Belgian citizens.

Fortunately, despite Belgian political and media complacency (RTBF, RTLTVI, etc.), Belgian citizens, such as “Brussels Panthers” [1]continue the fight against racism and negrophobia.

Burundi, Rwanda and the DRC Congo urgently waiting excuses of the Belgian State for colonization, a crime against humanity. In Belgium, at the end of the 1950s, blacks were exhibited in human zooswhere Belgian citizens could bring them bananas.

Black citizens in Belgium, Europe and America are the descendants of the victims or the victims of slavery, colonization and neocolonialismwhich have enriched and still enrich many European and American families from the 15th century to the present day.

In this new multipolar era that we live, African civil society, especially the diasporacalls on the African Union to cease all cooperation with racist countries towards black populations. Countries whose nationals of the diaspora are victims of negrophobia should set an example, starting by stopping any kind of cooperation with countries that maintain racism.
