Ukraine’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, singer Alina Pash, has resigned following allegations against her that she visited the Crimean peninsula illegally.

Pash has come under fire following a visit she allegedly made to the peninsula seven years ago. The region, annexed by Russia in 2014, is only allowed by Ukrainians to enter through special checkpoints.

Pash presented documents showing that she entered the place legally and not through Russia, which is prohibited under Ukrainian law. Authorities are trying to verify the authenticity of the documents with the inspectors.

The singer wrote on Instagram that “I am a Ukrainian citizen, I listen to Ukrainian laws. I am an artist, not a politician. I do not want to be part of the dirtier story. With a heavy heart I announce that I am giving up my candidacy to represent Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest. I am very sorry.”
