The Italian writer and left-wing activist Michela Murgia is dead. As the Ansa news agency reported on Friday, Murgia died on Thursday at the age of 51. Most recently, she campaigned for the rights of queer people in Italy.
Murgia, born in Cabras on Sardinia in 1972, studied theology and worked as a religion teacher. In 2006 she published her first book “il mondo deve sapere” (German: “Camilla im Callcenterland”) about the conditions in a call center. She received several awards for her novel “Accabadora” (2009). Her political writings include the book “Ave Mary”, published in 2011, in which she addresses the position of women in the Catholic world. Especially her book “Become a fascist. An instruction” had caused quite a stir by inventing a “fascistometer” for populists.

In May of this year, Murgia made her kidney cancer public in an interview with the newspaper “Corriere della Sera”. Despite her illness, which was already well advanced at the time, she stated that she hoped not to die under a head of government Meloni. Giorgia Meloni is the party leader of the post-fascist Fratelli d’Italia party and has been Italy’s prime minister since October 2022.
In recent weeks, Murgia has shared many private moments on social media with her queer “extended” family, as she called the people with whom she spent the final months of her life.
