The striking employees at the cement factory announced the end of the current strike and the resumption of work at the Burj factory in the city of Zliten after an agreement between the factory officials and the confirmation of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Union Contracting Company to meet the demands of the factory workers.

According to the statement issued by the protesters from inside the factory today, Monday, the demands were: that the headquarters of the reservation office be in the city of Zliten and that it be directly subordinate to the Board of Directors, and that its director be granted the powers of the company’s general manager.

The protesters also demanded the construction of a hospital for chest diseases, the establishment of an administrative building in the Majer area, the maintenance of the roads leading to the factory, and support for associations and state institutions in the city, as a matter of responsibility, according to the statement.

Attorney General curses resumption of work
For his part, the Attorney General’s Office announced the resumption of work at the Burj Cement Factory starting tomorrow, Tuesday, after an agreement between the workers and officials of the Burj Cement Factory and the Mayor of Zliten.

The Attorney General’s Office said the agreement included the chairman of the Arab Union Contracting Company’s confirmation that the factory workers’ “legitimate” demands would be met.

Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour stated that administrative treatments require the Audit Bureau to monitor the factory operator’s compliance with the rules governing work and defining obligations and duties by controlling what guarantees workers’ rights and ensures the company’s interests.

The mayor of Zliten, who attended the meeting, also stressed the need for the company to fulfill its obligations by directing mechanisms to organize relations between administrative divisions within the factory, revealing and withdrawing invalid decisions, ensuring the right to equality among consumers, and adhering to the rules governing priority of benefiting from the product.

The city’s residents had organized a protest last week, demanding that the competent authorities intervene to reopen the cement factory, as some of the employees working there depend on it for their livelihood.

The residents’ statement added that the continued closure of the factory has caused its prices to rise exorbitantly in the market, in addition to the halt of construction operations in the private and public sectors, in addition to the direct losses for those who depend on income from the factory.
