Agreement to set up wind farm: Protest in Sri Lanka against Adani | World | Deshabhimani

Colombo
Protest in Colombo over Gautam Adani’s contract to build 500 MW solar wind farm off Mannar coast. Protesters said Adani had won the deal outside of a “dubious” agreement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

A non-transparent agreement was reached between the two leaders to avoid the auction and award the contract directly to Adani. The Sri Lankan government has even agreed to amend the Electricity Act for this purpose. Nusli Hameem, leader of the People’s Power organization that organized the protest, said the plan was hidden from the public. Pictures of the protesters with placards reading ‘Stop Adani’ were circulated on social media.

MMC Ferdinando, former chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board, has exposed Modi’s involvement in securing the contract with Adani before a parliamentary committee. It was revealed that Modi had put pressure on the President. He was later forced to resign.
