Watan Al-Youm: The Assistant Secretary-General for Livestock at the Ministry of Agriculture, Ali Abu Nuqta, called for the purchase of municipal sheep during Eid Al-Adha; Due to the large numbers available in the market.
Abu Nuqta said that the demand for local sheep purchase supports Jordanian farms and sheep breeders, as there are approximately 950,000 sheep in the local market, of which more than 400,000 are of the age of sacrifice.
And he indicated that Jordan has imported, since the beginning of this year, more than 816,000 heads of imported sheep, mostly from Romania and Spain, where part of them has been slaughtered, and more than 300,000 heads of sheep remain.
Abu Nuqtah pointed out that Jordan imported about 37 thousand heads of calves, as the Jordanians need during Eid al-Adha from 15 to 17 thousand heads, in addition to the numbers of local calves.
He explained that Jordanians sacrifice about 200,000 heads of local sheep, and about 250,000 heads of imported sheep, during each Eid al-Adha.
And he continued, that the price of a kilo of municipal meat “standing” is about 4 dinars, and the imported one is 3.80 piasters, and calves are 3.25 piasters, and it rises during the Eid al-Adha period, saying: “In the days of Eid, it is likely to increase at a rate of 15-20 dinars per head.
