Dubai – Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the second phase of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The second phase of the plan includes a number of projects under ten key initiatives, including the improvement of city centers, the Dubai Real Estate Strategy, the Urban Farming Plan, the Preservation of Urban Heritage Plan, the development of the 20-Minute City Policy, and the Pedestrian Network Master Plan. Sheikh Mohammed also reviewed the progress of 17 projects and initiatives that form part of the initial phase of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. He said that they have a clear vision for the development of Dubai’s urban infrastructure and housing sector until 2040 and aim for Dubai to be an eco-friendly, pedestrian-friendly city, a smart city and yield from urban agriculture.

Mattar Al Tayer, Commissioner General of Infrastructure, Urban Planning and Well Being Pillar and Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Committee of Urban Planning, briefed Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid on the main projects of the second phase of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The new phase includes an integrated plan to develop five major urban centers (three existing and two new centers) in Dubai.

Phase II of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan also includes a framework for high-yield agriculture by identifying suitable locations and developing the necessary infrastructure to ensure food security. The second phase also outlines plans to enhance the emirate’s identity, promote historical areas, landmarks and buildings and improve the tourism experience at archaeological sites.

Pedestrians and cyclists can reach the destination in 20 minutes

The master plan also proposes developing a 20-minute city where residents can reach their destination within 20 minutes by foot or bicycle. The plan is to develop integrated service centers with all necessary amenities, increase population density around mass transit stations and allow residents to access 80% of their daily needs and destinations within 20 minutes. In addition, a plan will be developed to improve and use urban spaces such as alleys, spaces under bridges and squares, enhancing elements of well-being to make them attractive and relaxing for residents and visitors.

This initiative helps to enhance the beauty of urban areas, develop green corridors, reduce carbon emissions and improve landscaping strategy. A comprehensive plan for pedestrian and soft mobility across Dubai will focus on connected pathways in high-density areas.

In the second phase, a thoroughfare will be developed for all residential neighborhoods. An area within residential neighborhoods will be developed under the principle of an integrated street network. This initiative enhances well-being, supports smooth living and reduces travel time in Dubai.
