/ The Ministry of Agriculture responded, on Monday, to a parliamentary request regarding the rise in meat prices in Iraqi markets.
A letter signed by the Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, seen by Agency, stated, “A ministerial committee has been formed to reconsider controls on the import of sheep and livestock, with a decision being made for the Ministry of Commerce to supply bran to livestock owners at subsidized prices.”
He added, “The Department of Livestock proposed encouraging importers through the media and the Ministry’s information website for the purpose of importing sheep and calves for slaughtering purposes and red meat, in accordance with controls.”
He pointed out, “An approach to the Council of Ministers to obtain approvals to include importers of live animals for slaughter purposes at the official exchange rate from the Central Bank and through the electronic platform.”
The Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture pointed out “proposing amendments to the instructions and conditions for establishing and operating ruminant projects to improve the status of livestock with the aim of encouraging breeders to establish ruminant projects.”
He continued, “The Council of Ministers Resolution No. (23493) of 2023 was issued and communicated to us in accordance with the letter of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers/Department of Affairs and Committees No. 41925 on 8/31/2023, which included approval to reduce the amount of customs duty imposed on live animals imported for slaughter purposes (livestock and sheep).” To become 4%.
