“It is impossible to prevent the minister from coming to the PAK”: a former senior police official responds to the criticism
The day of disruption continued: hundreds demonstrated in front of the Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem, thousands protested in central Tel Aviv

In Ben Gvir’s letter to Shabtai, he favorably noted the latter’s performance: “I would like to thank you for your personal handling of the attempts at anarchy this week. I have no doubt that if you had not been in the PAK and taken command of what happened on Ayalon Road, we would have witnessed a serious disruption of public order. There is no disputing the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of demonstration, but freedom of expression is not a check open to anarchy and harm and disruption of the lives of the country’s citizens. My policy is that the blocking of central transportation routes should not be allowed, and the fabric of life should not be disrupted due to demonstrations and protests.”

Minister Ben Gabir also stated in his address, “Of course, each commander in the field has a discretion on how to implement the policy, but it must be remembered that it is the minister who sets the policy, not the commander in the field. This week there was a meeting with you, with the Jerusalem Police Department and the Tel Aviv District Police Department, And against the background of the violent protests of the last week that are expected to continue in the coming weeks, I will ask my lord to summon the commander of the Tel Aviv district, and clarify to him my policy regarding the blockade of roads.”

Ben Gabir’s appeal to the Commissioner came after the public criticism of the Tel Aviv District Police regarding the use of stun grenades against the demonstrators on the “National Disruption Day”. The police claimed that they were used after violence was used against police officers, something that had not happened until then. As a result of the clashes, they were injured 11 protesters who needed treatment at the hospital, and dozens of people were arrested.
