This was conveyed by Sahroni in response to the steps taken by the Babel Regional Office (Kanwil) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to continue the construction of the Toboali Prison as stated by Kakanwil Harun Sulianto, in Pangkalpinang, Saturday (28/4),
The construction of Toboali Prison is also based on the absence of a correctional institution in South Bangka Regency.
Sahroni himself believes that the main problem with prisons in Indonesia is generally related to excess capacity in prisons.
“Our main problem is that many prisons are overcapacity. If we let this continue, we are worried that it will become unfit and human rights aspects will become vulnerable,” said Sahroni in a written statement, Monday (29/4).
Therefore, he continued, for areas that do not yet have a prison, such as in Toboali, Commission III strongly supports the immediate construction of a prison there.
“Other Regional Offices of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights can also be imitated, (convicts) should not be piled up in one place,” said the legislator from the NasDem Party faction.
However, Sahroni also gave a message to law enforcers to continue to prioritize restorative justice.
