The family of journalist Ahmed Al-Senussi announced his return to his home after he was referred to the Public Prosecution today, Sunday.

Senussi’s release came after his disappearance sparked international concern and local reaction, with the European Union mission and several diplomatic missions expressing their concern, calling for his immediate release.

While the release of Al-Senussi is being announced, a number of activists, politicians and reformers continue to be detained, including the head of the Supreme Council of the Fezzan Tribes, Ali Abu Sabiha, who was arrested by the Internal Security Service in Sabha in mid-April.

The detention of the member of the Constitution Drafting Assembly, Sheikh Al-Zain Al-Arabi Al-Dardir, who was kidnapped from the Ubari area at the end of last April, continues. His family believes that he will be transferred to a prison in the city of Benghazi.

In addition, political activists Fathi Al-Baja, Tariq Al-Bishri, and Salem Al-Araibi, along with journalist Nasser Al-Daisy, were kidnapped in early October of last year by the Internal Security Service in Benghazi.

These arrests raise local and international concerns about the increasing suppression of freedom of expression in Libya, as several statements were previously issued condemning the kidnapping of these activists from local human rights organizations and international missions in Libya.

Civil society organizations in Libya have repeatedly called for the fate of detainees to be revealed and their immediate release, for a transparent investigation into cases of enforced disappearance and torture to be conducted, and for those responsible for these violations to be held accountable.

On April 19, Siraj Daghman, who was arrested with Al-Baja and Al-Bishri, died. No official investigation was opened into the circumstances of his death, and the Internal Security attributed the cause of death to Daghman falling from a high place after he tried to escape from his prison.
