Challenge to avenge last year’s World Tour Finals semifinal loss
Ahn Se-young (23, Samsung Life Insurance), the star of the national badminton team, will challenge for victory in her first international competition of the new year.
Ahn Se-young, ranked No. 1 in the women’s singles world rankings, will compete with China’s Wang Zhiyi (2nd) for the championship in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 Malaysia Open women’s singles final held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the 12th.
Ahn Se-young easily defeated Thailand’s Ratchanok Inthanon (16th) in the semifinals held the previous day (11th) with a set score of 2-0 (21-14 21-18), giving the green light to win the tournament.
For Ahn Se-young, the Malaysia Open is a tournament with good memories. He won this competition in January of last year, starting a rebound after a knee injury.
After continuing her steady performance, she had her best year by winning the women’s singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics in August last year.
The finals of this tournament are a stage of revenge for Ahn Se-young. Last year, he lost 0-2 to Wang Zhiyi in the semifinals of the HSBC Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Finals 2024 and was unable to advance to the finals.
