The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decided to investigate the circumstances surrounding the remarks made by ‘Badminton Queen’ Ahn Se-young (22), who won the gold medal in the women’s singles at the Paris Olympics, as soon as the Olympics are over.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced in a press release on the 6th, “As the Paris Olympics are currently underway, we will determine the exact facts as soon as the Olympics are over and review the need for appropriate corrective measures based on the results.”

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also plans to comprehensively review other sports besides badminton to see if there are areas where player management can be improved.

Earlier, world No. 1 Ahn Se-young announced her intention to leave the national team at a press conference after winning the women’s singles final at the Paris Olympics on the 5th, saying that the national team had been too complacent about her knee injury. Ahn Se-young said, “The injury (the knee I suffered at the Asian Games last year) was more serious than I thought and never fully recovered, but I was very disappointed that the national team had been too complacent about the injury.” She added, “I also think that it might be difficult for me to continue to play with the national team in the future.”

In the press conference, Ahn Se-young strongly criticized the Korea Badminton Association for problems surrounding player development and training methods, the association’s decision-making system, and participation in competitions.

As controversy grew over her bombshell announcement, Ahn Se-young said on social media on the 6th, “I wanted to talk about protecting and managing players, but I feel sorry that it seems to have been conveyed in a provocative way,” and explained, “Please do not misinterpret it as retirement.”
