Artificial intelligence (AI) is more likely to create than destroy jobs, according to a study published by the International Labor Organization (ILO) this Monday (21).

The launch in November of the ChatGPT program, considered a revolution in the use of generative AI, raised fears about the transformation of the world of work and its impact on jobs.

But a new ILO report examines the potential effect of artificial intelligence platforms and suggests that most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation.

According to this UN agency, “it is more likely” that most jobs and industries “will be complemented” rather than “replaced” by generative AI.

“It is likely that the greatest impact of this technology is not the destruction of employment, but potential changes in the quality of jobs, in particular the intensity of work and autonomy”, reveals the publication.

The study highlights that the effects of this new technology vary considerably according to professions and areas.

Administrative work in offices would be the most exposed category, with almost a quarter of the tasks considered very likely to be affected, and more than half with a medium level of exposure.

By contrast, in managerial and technical job categories, only a small portion of jobs will be affected by AI, according to the survey.

The study indicates that high-income countries will suffer the most important effects of automation, due to the large proportion of office jobs.

And it highlights that women would be more likely to be affected than men – more than twice as likely in the case of middle- and high-income countries, due to their under-representation in administrative work.

The authors of the study estimate, however, that in these countries only 5.5% of total jobs would be potentially exposed to the effects of the use of generative AI and only 0.4% in the case of developing countries.

The report also points out that the socio-economic repercussions of generative AI “will largely depend on how” its diffusion is managed.
