Lumen Technologies Accelerates AI Infrastructure Build-Out with Massive Fiber Expansion
Table of Contents
Lumen technologies is aggressively expanding it’s fiber network across North America, positioning itself as a critical infrastructure provider for the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) economy. The company’s latest status report details significant progress toward its goal of deploying 47 million intercity fiber miles, a multi-billion dollar investment designed to meet the escalating bandwidth demands of AI-driven applications.
Laying the Foundation for the AI Economy
Lumen is undertaking a coast-to-coast construction project, delivering what the company describes as “significant” advancements in building the backbone for AI. Plans include adding 34 million intercity fiber miles by the end of 2028, supplementing the progress already made in 2025. Network capacity upgrades and high-speed connectivity enhancements are already underway, providing the infrastructure enterprises need to power increasingly complex AI workloads.
“This isn’t incremental: we’re positioning Lumen as the trusted network for AI, ensuring our customers have the network scale, speed and reliability to confidently innovate and grow without constraints,” said a senior official at Lumen technologies.
2025 milestones: Fiber Deployment and Capacity Gains
As of the end of August 2025,Lumen had deployed over 2.2 million new intercity fiber miles – representing more than 2,500 route miles. The company projects this figure will reach 16.6 million total intercity fiber miles by year-end.To maximize efficiency, Lumen is utilizing next-generation fiber optic cable from Corning, enabling it to fit twice as much fiber into existing conduits.
Did you know?– Lumen is using Corning fiber optic cable to double fiber capacity in existing conduits. This boosts efficiency and speeds up deployment across the network.
Beyond fiber deployment, Lumen is also bolstering its network with advanced signal boosters. Construction is currently in progress at 176 in-line amplifier (ILA) sites, featuring shelters designed to provide up to triple the power density of customary ILA shelters, ensuring future scalability and resilience. The company has also strategically expanded its Conduit Access, securing long-term rights to underground pathways across 55 additional routes, giving it greater control over fiber deployment.
Boosting Network Capacity for Data-Intensive AI
lumen has already added 5.9+ Petabits per second (Pbps) of total capacity to its network in 2025,preparing for the massive data processing requirements of AI. A further investment of over $100 million is being directed towards increasing connectivity speeds up to 400Gbps across cloud environments, data centers, and metropolitan areas. This initiative has already resulted in a 400G-enabled network spanning over 100,000 route miles.
Ultra-Low-Loss Fiber and Reduced Latency
Lumen claims to operate the largest ultra-low-loss intercity fiber network in north America, connecting more than 50 major cities. The network utilizes fiber with 25% less optical loss than competing networks – a reduction from .22 db/km loss to .17 db/km when compared to older fiber standards. This translates to less frequent signal regeneration, lowering equipment costs and improving overall efficiency.
Pro tip:– Lumen’s ultra-low-loss fiber reduces signal degradation. This means less frequent signal regeneration, lowering costs and improving network efficiency for AI applications.
The network is also designed for superior performance, boasting 60% more capacity than traditional designs and offering latency of less than five milliseconds at the edge, covering up to 97% of US business demand. .
Lumen Private Connectivity fabric: Streamlining AI integration
Complementing its physical infrastructure, Lumen is enhancing its Private Connectivity Fabric, a platform designed to simplify the integration of AI workloads. The Fabric offers a self-service portal and full lifecycle automation, allowing businesses to purchase, deploy, and manage consumption-based services with agility in a multi-cloud environment.
Reader question:– How does Lumen’s Private Connectivity Fabric help AI? It simplifies AI workload integration with a self-service portal and automation for multi-cloud environments.
“Every mile of new fiber and capacity upgrade adds to the strength of our Private Connectivity Fabric,”
