Devil’s work or an enrichment for humanity? Artificial intelligence divides opinions. t-online readers express their thoughts on the latest technological developments.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is spreading – and at an astonishingly fast pace. Many people are optimistic about the technological development and are happy about the achievements it has already brought about and will bring in the future.

Others are unsettled and worried about the unpredictability. Historian Yuval Noah Harari also warns urgently about the risks in an interview with t-online. What do t-online readers think about the AI revolution?

Ronny Berlinke is certain: “In five years, every menial service will be performed by artificial intelligence like ChatGPT. This will affect jobs such as telephone customer service and many administrative tasks.”

“Man must always have control over the products he creates,” says Uwe Diameter. It starts on a small scale. “A smartphone user should be able to control the entire operating system of his device. Products should always be built in such a way that they can be understood not only by the manufacturer but also by the user themselves – at least roughly.”

Monika Engelhardt longs for a time that was much less dominated by technology than today: “There is no need to bring children into the world when so many machines are being produced and people are no longer doing work. Technology has already destroyed so much and made people redundant – and it will continue like this.” The t-online reader believes that the value of people is suffering as a result.

“As long as we have control over AI applications in our hands, the danger is manageable,” thinks Georg Maus and at the same time objects: “If AI systems as self-learning, highly dynamic systems turn this constellation around and take over, we have lost.” Even today, experts do not understand the learning mechanisms of the new technology and are astonished by its own dynamics. The t-online reader calls AI “the gunpowder and nuclear fission of the 21st century: started with the best of intentions and degenerating into a deadly danger.”

Gerald Eichstädt considers the combination of artificial intelligence and military equipment or weapons development to be particularly problematic. He also fears that international politics will be just as unable to contain the excesses of the new technology as was the case with the corona pandemic.

“The only approach to prevent a serious escalation of AI is to create an ethical awareness among developers and not to develop a potentially dangerous or too powerful AI in the first place. Technical countermeasures to catch an escaped AI are more likely to aggravate the situation than to calm it down. Because then an arms race between artificial intelligences takes place, in which humans get caught up in the wheels,” believes the graduate mathematician.

“In some areas of life, technology has already entered,” says Anneliese Reichelt She cites the production of food, vehicles, machinery, electronics and financial transactions as examples.

“But in more subtle questions such as nature, feelings, free will and decisions, people clearly have the upper hand. Ultimately, it will be up to people to what extent they allow themselves to be instrumentalized or not. I hope that in the future they will not agree on everything; in this respect, there is always the chance to weigh up the pros and cons, to look for and find new ways and possibilities.”

Norbert Rohr says: “I also have the impression that this technology is being handled too carelessly.” Artificial intelligence with its own ability to think should be treated with absolute caution, says the t-online reader.
