Six films directed by students from the International Cinema Academy (AIC) were selected for the New York Brazilian Film Festival (NYBRFF) which takes place on September 23rd and 24th.

The festival is dedicated to celebrating the art of Brazilian cinematography and, at the same time, offers an international platform to promote Brazil’s image abroad in one of the most important cities for art in the world. “Our goal is to encourage community involvement, take Brazilian productions to the largest possible audience and increase the reach of Brazilian films on the international market, thus promoting them.”

Selected AIC films

Chameleons, by Camila Jaquiel

Chameleons tells the story of Joana, an aspiring actress who suffers from bipolar disorder, just like her mother and grandmother. Joana’s grandmother, Dona Ditinha, lives well with the disorder. Not her mother. Joana still doesn’t know if she will be like her mother or grandmother. Through letters that Joana writes to her grandmother, reports from bipolar artists and a documentary about chameleons, we follow the doubts and anxieties of those living with bipolar disorder.

In addition to being directed by a former student of the Filmworks course, the actresses are students of the Technician in Acting for Cinema and TV (TAC).

Archaic, by Julia Rantigueri

Cida owns an antique shop in São Luiz do Paraitinga. When she notices the disappearance of some of her deceased brother’s objects, she goes out into the city in an attempt to recover them. In parallel, she revisits the city’s memory along with its history, reformulating issues repressed by the longing she feels for the past.

The Maiden in the Tower, by Giovanna Borsarini

Bete is a journalist with Alzheimer’s. She lives immersed in the memories she experienced during Brazil’s military regime. Reality and the dreamlike mix in her daily life and Bete can no longer differentiate what is real or not.

Pizza, Fish and Pickaxes, by Maynard Stuart Farrel

In a dystopian world, Roberto works hard in his bicycle shop. One day he realizes that he has no money left and decides to declare bankruptcy. While waiting in the “Bankrupt Line”, he is approached by a “Picareta” lawyer, looking for new “Fish” to extort. She proposes a very bizarre solution to save her company – the payment of her debt, in the currency of “Pizzas”.

Cantareira, by Rodrigo Ribeyro

Bento, a worker and resident of the center of São Paulo, returns to the place where he grew up: his grandfather’s house in Serra da Cantareira. There, he seeks not only peace, but also a job.

The film, by the former Filmworks student, was also awarded at the Cannes festival.

Silver, by Lucas Melo

The film follows Gustavo, a young man from the Prata neighborhood, in Nova Iguaçu, who lost his job after an argument with his boss over the first real image of a black hole.

The film delves into the routines, subjectivities and complexities of its characters’ youth, flirting with fantastic realism and blurring the lines that divide documentary and fiction, Prata is above all about youth.

The film won the 2020 Curta Cinema Award.
