Air Force Soldiers Destroy Barbed Wire Fences for Drunken Driving at Base

Possibility of car theft… “Discipline is beyond the pale”

Air Force soldiers drove drunk in the middle of the night on base, causing accidents such as damaging several barbed wire fences. Air Force bases are home to important facilities such as fighter jet runways that must be on alert 24 hours a day to prepare for North Korean provocations. There are criticisms that discipline within the military has gone too far.

According to the Air Force on the 4th, two people, including a driver and a passenger, were arrested by the military police on the morning of the previous day (the 3rd) at the 1st Fighter Squadron in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, and are being investigated on charges of drunk driving.

It is reported that they drove an official vehicle without permission at dawn after drinking all night and crashed into 5 or 6 barbed wire fences on the road outside the base before stopping. However, it was determined that they did not speed on the runway within the base. They received treatment at a military hospital for minor bruises from the impact at the time of the accident.

This incident was first reported on the afternoon of the 3rd through a tip posted on an online community. The tipper wrote, “A few (Air Force soldiers) were drunk, stole a car, and drove it at 100 km/h outside the airfield.”

An Air Force official said, “We need to investigate whether they were driving over 100 km/h. The post on the community is somewhat exaggerated,” and added, “The barbed wire fence on the road outside the base was damaged in several places.” They also said, “(The vehicle) stopped in one place, and the military police, who saw this on the closed-circuit (CC) TV, were immediately dispatched.” The driver’s breathalyzer test results reportedly showed a level that would result in his license being suspended. Since the keys to the vehicle they were driving are managed separately by the unit, there is also a possibility that they stole the vehicle while intoxicated.
