This is one of the indicators most followed by our fellow citizens in Europe, who despair, despite clear improvements, of the persistence in the atmosphere of certain pollutants. While air quality has generally improved in European skies over the past thirty years, emissions of fine particles (PM2.5) still caused the premature death of 238,000 people in 2020, and 49,000 died prematurely because of emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a gas produced mainly by vehicles and thermal power plants, according to the European Environment Agency.
