Romania offers itself as a hub for Ukrainian grain exports In view of the threat of Russian attacks on civilian ships on the Ukrainian Black Sea coast, Romania offers itself as a hub for Ukrainian grain exports. “We hope that more than 60 percent of Ukraine’s total grain exports will transit through Romania,” Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Friday after meeting his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Schmyhal in Bucharest.

The Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta was already a central part of the most important alternative route for Ukrainian grain exports before Russia withdrew from the international agreement on safe exports via Ukrainian Black Sea ports in July. Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain exporters, shipped 8.1 million tons via Constanta from January to July. In the whole of last year it was 8.6 million tons.

Ships from the Ukraine reach the most important seaport of the NATO and EU member Romania via the Danube and the Danube-Black Sea Canal. Ciolacu announced that in addition to its waterways, Romania also wants to improve rail and road connections and border clearance. Romania’s Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu recently announced that the capacity for shipping Ukrainian grain via Constanta is to be doubled to four million tons per month in the coming months.
