It has been reported that Airbnb, a global accommodation sharing platform, was more eager to prevent public disclosure of reports of customer damage caused by ‘hidden cameras’ than to come up with countermeasures.

According to CNN on the 10th (local time), Airbnb received a court order to disclose the number of complaints and reports related to hidden cameras received by the company over the past 10 years.

Airbnb said in court that it had a total of 35,000 customer interactions related to “surveillance equipment” since December 1, 2013.

However, Airbnb claimed that the actual number of reports of hidden cameras is lower than this, as this figure also includes cases of malfunctioning front door cameras or tablet PCs with recording functions being left indoors.

CNN has independently reviewed related cases and reported that there are currently more than 10 cases and investigations across the United States, with at least 75 victims.

CNN pointed out that some victims in particular are complaining of fear and trauma, saying that even scenes of them changing clothes or having sex in their accommodations were distributed.

However, victims reported that Airbnb was only eager to keep the hidden camera issue from becoming public, such as by contacting the victims to encourage them to settle or including in the settlement terms a nondisclosure agreement that would prevent the information from being made public.

There have also been criticisms that Airbin&B’s process for screening out lodging hosts is problematic.

CNN reported that while Airbnb screens hosts based on factors such as criminal records, it does not automatically disqualify a listing if it discovers that the host has been convicted of murder, terrorism, rape, or child sexual abuse.

CNN also reported that Airbnb also placed a “caution” on its website warning customers not to rely solely on its background checks to determine whether a host has a criminal record.
